I love the idea of monthly photos – at least for the first year! We have tried to keep up with it now that Jojo turned 1 but it’s just to difficult to do it yourself with a crazy wild toddler.
Every time we took photos with Jojo after Month 7 it got difficult. We thought every photo was horrible because it was hard to get him to sit still, or even stay on his chair (btw chair is from Pottery Barn Kids.) After we would pretty much call our photoshoot quits – because we thought we couldn’t get a good picture of what was in our heads, we would look at the photos we got and they were always perfect!
By the time we were planning his 12 month photos we were finally relaxed enough that we just didn’t care, as long as we could get one smiling picture(even if he has a snack in hand) we were happy!! We also edited about three pictures from every photo shoot, so here’s a close up of some of Jojo’s monthlies!
Month 1: September
In Jojo’s first Month we honestly didn’t even plan on how we were gonna do his monthly photos, I just knew I would use his monthly tie sitickers, and to stick with his theme of Mario.
Month 2: October
I am a mom who is obsessed with Halloween! (I probably still wasn’t getting much sleep) I probably could have dressed him up in some awesome Halloween costume, but instead I used a fun skull one-sie and his orange cloth diaper and decided to decorate his chair with decorations I had for the house for Halloween. I still think it came out pretty cute
Month 3: November ( I couldn’t choose just one!)
I was starting to get sleep so I got a little more creative with the props! I found this giant pie hat on amazon, and while at the time it was way bigger than Jojo, I thought it would be hilarious, we also had a giant turkey too! both made for some funny pictures.
Month 4: December
So of course we had to do the standard baby with Christmas Lights! This was probably one of our easiest photo shoots! He loved the lights and around 4 months we were seeing a lot more of his personality and his giggles!
Month 5: January
Jojo was born on August first so it made it perfect sense for us to do a new year photo themed monthly. I still don’t know how we got this perfect shot of Jojo blowing a noise maker!( I’m gonna say it was luck and teething mixed together!)
Month 6: February
Oh Jojo’s half Birthday, and the month of love! I decided we should mix the two together, I had originally planned on having a hat made that said 1/2 but this didn’t arrive in time, so you do what you have to do, even if that means using a chalk sticker and writing 1/2 on it yourself! all in all while this isn’t my favorite monthly photo, he still looks adorable and I got to take more Valentines day photos of him anyway!
Month 7: March
Oh St. Patricks day! This was just a no brainer, make Jojo an adorable little leprechaun! I ordered a small clip on hat(I’m sure it was more used as a female prop but who cares!) Joey added a beautiful rainbow behind Jojo using after affects because every leprechaun has a rainbow right? and coins of course! The coins are just chocolate and he never even broke the seal!
Month 8: April
We had to go with April fools day,duh because Jojo would turn 8 months on the 1st! So we tried to make our lil guy a original Prankster! we added a whoopie cushion and of course Groucho Glasses so no one could tell it was Jojo! a sideways hat always makes kids look like they are up to no good!
Month 9: May
Now for some the month of May is a pretty boring month. No big holidays, other than in Florida it would be when school gets out and summer begins. For this nerd family we celebrate May The Fourth Be With You! So it was time for Jojo to start his training! We got him an X-Wing costume and we already had three bb-8(Christmas gifts) and of course a light saber, which Joey made look amazing again using After Affects( Jojo’s lucky to h ave a dad that can make magic) So I’m gonna show you a close up of two of these because I love both of these photos so much! This photo shoot was fun because we used alot of things we already had!
Month 10: June
The month when Summer officially begins(although in Florida its summer year round). Living in Florida means you go to the beach alot! While I just love lounging and getting a tan, Joey loves surfing! We hope one day little Jojo will follow in his daddys footsteps and learn how to surf! So we thought we would start Jojo off with a little surfing photo-shoot to ease him into it. We made him a surfboard out of cardboard that was just his size, and its a fun photoprop that I will probably keep forever (maybe even use again)
Month 11: July
July is the Month all about America! (you know because we celebrate our Independence day!) So this photoshoot was meant to be patriotic as well as funny! So no – Jojo is not really drinking a beer and there aren’t any eagles or fireworks going off (its all just good old’ photoshop!) I hope none of these photos offend anyone, it was all just for fun, I’m hoping to be able to embarrass my son when he’s older.
Month 12: August
Jojo is One!!! We had to go back to what we originally started with, Super Mario! With this photo we actually used a real backdrop. We had used this backdrop for our baby shower for our photobooth(also which was Super Mario themed) so it was a perfect opportunity to add more to this important monthly photo! I wish I could say this photoshoot was easy, but the only way to get Jojo to sit in his chair was if he had a snack in his mouth! So we gave in,I still think he looks super adorable!
I love that I will have so many amazing monthly photos to look back and watch Jojo grow!
Here’s a quick set of tips to help you do your own monthly photos!
- Plan ahead if you are wanting monthly themed photos (like this!) I wish on some of these photo’s I thought ahead.
- Don’t stress if it’s not the exact photo you saw in your mind, babies are little people and they don’t always wanna do what you want them to, but being able to have a photo that shows this will be a perfect memory.
- Give them food! (of course once they are old enough for solids) Bribery works even when they are small.
- Keep it simple! We used one small light for all of these since ‘sitting still time’ is super short with the little one
