I’ve been Mommin’ for only a year and a half now, so I am in no means an expert (but really who could be one, every child is different). When I was pregnant with Jojo I did tons of research, read What to Expect when your Expecting, and a ton of other things. Google and Pinterest were my friends. I quickly realized having a newborn was probably gonna be messy and gross. I figured I would get spit up on, he may have a hard time latching, he may not take a bottle, he may even be lactose intolerant, and so many other things that could happen. When Jojo arrived, everything seemed to work out fine. We had a few problems latching on one side which we worked out over time. We also thought he had tortocolis, but we just kept repositioning him and again it all just worked out. Literally Jojo’s whole first year of life we had no unexpected visits to the doctor. No ear infections, he never even spit up,not even any blow outs! pretty much an easy baby right?
The problem is I got comfortable with that. I never thought he would get sick, I didn’t even really worry about food allergies as we tried new ones. I felt proud, after taking him to the doctor for his one year checkup and hearing the doctor say, “wow he’s never visited us for any other reasons then his wellness visits, that’s impressive.” I think I even got a little cocky, like yeah, “we don’t get sick, because he stays at home with me”.
Well let me tell you, I’ve learned my lesson! Now Jojo is a picky eater, when it comes to veggies he pretty much says no to anything that’s green. So to get veggies in we just use pouches. One day I had some corn while Jojo and I sat down to have lunch together. Of course what did he want? Some of my corn! I of course let him try it, but I was thinking the whole time “He’s not gonna like this”. Well what do you know, this kid loved corn he wanted more and more and more. Which made me super happy! My child is finally eating veggies!(not the best,or even green, but a veggie)
The next day however, made me hate corn. Joey and I decided to do our monthly run to Costco. I decided to pick us up some Chick-Fil-A, so we could have a quick meal before we went shopping. So I gave Jojo a veggie pack with lunch before we left and some pretzels for a snack in the car (sometimes food is the only way for a happy drive) We arrived at Chick-Fil-A and ours has a double drive through. I get in the lane closest to the building. There is a car ahead of me ordering and a car beside me. While I’m waiting I hear at first what I thought was Jojo choking. I looked in the rear view mirror and instead saw him puking. So as happy as I was that he was not choking, I wanted to get out of the line to make sure he is ok and clean him up. Well now there is someone behind me so I was stuck. I moved ahead in line, ordered whatever came to mind(no time to gander at the menu) and quickly moved along in the line-up while constantly checking on Jojo who was not even moving. He looked like he was in shock and didn’t know what the hell he had just experienced. I of course kept talking to him promising him everything was gonna be ok. We got our food and I quickly parked the car.
Now the funny part is I’m the new mom who thought she knew it all, I never usually leave the house without my diaper bag. This diaper bag always has one to two extra outfits, wipes, diapers, toys, water, and snacks. Well you better believe I did not have my bag, I figured we were going on a quick trip not even getting out of the car, why would I need it? So I grabbed the napkins from our to-go meal and headed to the back seat, when Jojo proceeded to puke even more! He is still rear facing so its hitting the car seat, it’s all over him, his toy, and its a lovely shade of purple. The worst part was every time I would attempt to wipe Jojo off he would cry (it was like he thought he did something wrong). I cleaned him the best I could using the few napkins I had and using a jacket I had in the car. Then I decided we would attempt to drive home (its only a 10 min drive).
Once we were home, I decided it would be easiest to take Jojo and his car seat in at the same time. After Bringing them in and grabbing the food, I lifted Jojo and his car seat closer to the bathroom. I asked him if he wanted a bath, which got me a smile and made me feel like he might be doing better. So I got him out of his car seat, got the gross clothes off him, and plopped him in the bath. While he was laying in the tub (Jojo doesn’t ever sit in the tub) I decided to start taking apart his car seat so I could wash everything. After I finally figured out how the hell to get the car seat cover off I decided to drop it and his gross clothes in the washer.
The washer and dryer are directly across from his bathroom, so I can see him, but I cant see inside his tub. Once I went back in the bathroom, I quickly noticed his tub was now filled with poop. Yes people my child pooped in his tub along with all his toys, and it was corn poop!! Yeah, little kernels all around him in the water. You better believe he also had a giant smile on his face! (he must have felt better) So with that I got him out of the tub, had him stand on the bathroom mat, and tried to put a towel around him (he refused it) so he stood there naked while I tried to clean the mess out of his tub and remove his toys which were now toxic. I’ve never been more thankful that we cloth diaper, because we have a sprayer attached to our toilet, so that helped clear the tub of the corn.
Once I was done and ready to refill the tub again, I went to pick Jojo up and saw he pooped on the rug! So in he went to the tub once again, while mom grabbed the mat and added that to the washer.
Once he was all cleaned, he seemed like he was happy and back to his normal self. I however was stunned and tired. In as little as an hour I was brought back to mom reality. Having this happen made me realize Jojo is not invincible. It also made me think that all these things I’ve read about prior to having Jojo really could and does happen to people with kids.
As funny as it is to read about, when I was dealing with it, I honestly was so worried. I didn’t know what was wrong I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. Jojo had never thrown up so that was a complete shock, to both him and me. The good news is, after Jojo’s bath he seemed 100%! So the only thing I can assume is little Jojo’s tummy could handle the corn, after he got it all out of his system he was fine.
This was my first real mom moment, it was the moment when I honestly didn’t know what to do, there wasn’t a book I could grab to read about it, I had to deal with it in that moment. In the end I was glad it happened because I’m sure there will be more of these moments. Maybe now I won’t feel like Jojo is invincible, and realize crazy (and gross) things will happen.
I’m sure all you moms have moments like this, Please tell me you have!!
