Although my son is now 15 months old, I wanted to go back and kind of start from the beginning.
Maybe this isn’t the very beginning but this was the most fun part of pregnancy. After we found out the news, I made a pact with my boyfriend Joey that if we had a girl I would get to design her room and if it was a boy he would get to. Well if you don’t know yet, It’s a Boy!
While we were deciding on how to reveal the gender to our friends and family, we were talking about how crazy it is to create new life and Joey jokingly said
it’s like one-uping in super Mario brothers.
From there on it was all Super Mario for his gender reveal, his baby shower, his first Birthday, and his nursery.
Joey was in charge of pretty much all the work, because at that time I was working nights, and of course, I was pregnant! While I was working, we had two incomes, but we still were very much aware that we needed to be budget conscious. After Jojo was born we would be only surviving off of one income. While we dreamed of having someone come in and hand paint murals, pick out expensive and gorgeous furniture, and extra decorations, we knew it wouldn’t be a good idea. We were very realistic and budget conscious. We decided the best way was to paint the room ourselves! So after a trip to Lowes and looking through dozens of paint colors. We finally decided on a sky blue color.
While Joey spent many nights painting the room and making perfect edges, I was trying to think of way to add Mario to the room without breaking the bank. after countless hours looking on etsy and trying to convince joey that we have to spend more money, we found some Super Mario decals on Amazon. Now ordering online is scary because you’re never positive the size will be correct and if it is a quality product. After receiving our decals I was so excited to see them on the walls, but after opening them I have to admit I was very nervous that they were too small. My other worry was, how in the world are we going to put these up on all four walls and keep them straight. Lucky for me I have a super talented man who somehow made it work. After seeing the decals up, I was so excited our theme was really coming together, we just needed our baby furniture!
While I was happy with Jojo’s room, I didn’t realize Joey had more plans for it! While I was at work he hand drew giant cloud stencils using cardboard and started paining clouds all over the walls, he then added eyes on some clouds. So after coming home from a long night at work I was shown this amazing surprise. There is nothing like seeing your husband/boyfriend going the extra mile on your child’s room. It made me realize how excited and happy he was for our new journey.
Most of Jojo’s furniture in his room were gifts from friends and family members. One of the things we bought ourselves, which we bought as soon as we found out we were expecting, was the crib. The only reason we purchased a crib so early was to help our dog get used to all of the changes early on. Our crib was also found on amazon, we did a lot of research trying to find a good, safe, and budget friendly crib for our Jojo. His crib has been perfect for him even with all his jumping and running in it! We chose for everything to be white, which might have been a mistake only because, well, kids are messy. We wanted a cheerful room and black and brown furniture just didn’t seem to fit. All of his furniture is still white except his crib has some bite marks on it now, but we’ve covered that with a bumper. Over the 9 months we had before Jojo was expected to greet us, we had collected a lot of books, both new and some books from Joey’s childhood that his mom had kept over the years. So after seeing how large Jojo’s library already was, we realized we needed bookshelves. I found the cutest bookshelves at pottery barn Kids and got a great deal on them. Once those were up and we filled them with all his books, I realized we are gonna need even more shelving as he grow. !So I hope Jojo doesn’t mind getting book shelves for Christmas!
The last piece of furniture that we purchased was our cloud lamp, I found this lamp from Ikea, so it was a great price and really completed the sky look for our room.
The final part to Jojo’s room, actually comes from his amazing Nonnie. She came down from Pennsylvania a few days before his due date. Nonnie hand drew a stencil and painted “Joey’s World” on his wall above his crib. I’m still trying to convince her to sign it. She keeps trying to tell me that as he gets older he will not want “joey’s world” on his wall, I however will probably never want his nursery to change.
His nursery was built by many people who love him, and while I didn’t get to do much of the painting, I am forever grateful for the family that made the Mario vision i had in my head a reality. His room is the most magical room in the house, and I love watching him point to all the characters and baby talk say “whadthat?”or when I ask his where’s Yoshi he looks around the room until he finds him. It makes me so happy and proud that he is enjoying his room and I can’t wait for him to grow into it more and discover super mario for himself. Maybe he will play the games with his Daddy!
